character. CHARACTER NAME: Celeste AGE: physically/mentally 18 | years alive 6 APPEARANCE:
PBed by Imogen Poots. Scar on her face, included. As well as other scars on her body (neck, chest, arms). More modern attire (featured in possessions), but hair styled the same. Blonde hair (hard to see with the low saturation) and blue eyes. BRIEF WORLD INFO:
The setting is a normal, 21st-century Earth. Technology is the same, geography is the same, religion is the same, etc. The only difference is the underground supernatural themes running through the world. Angels and demons are very real, as well as magic. These sorts of things are kept very quiet, though, or are regarded as religious stories or mythical stories (depending on the beings involved) if they're discovered.
Angels
The first beings created by God. They are often referred to as Firsts or The Firsts. It is believed that talking about them gives them more strength (although it is not proven). Angels were created to serve God, but to be effective were given personalities and thoughts of their own, but were not given the option of Free Will. With knowledge and sentience comes the desire for Free Will, though. Many Firsts chose to stay with God, but many rebelled in order to assert independence. There are also the Renegades, who chose neither God nor Lucifer in his falling and instead chose Man.
Angels are winged beings with no apparent sex. In their natural form, they have no faces and no faces. To come to Earth, Angels must take a human form. This limits their abilities severely, but even in a limited state they are still stronger than normal human beings. The newer a form the easier to kill, the older the more powerful (with power topping out at the maximum a First can maintain on the Earthly plain, which is still far from the full power of Angels). However, the longer a First is in a human form the more likely they are to forget who they truly are. In human form, Firsts do not age and retain some of the magic they might have had in Angelic form (but to a lesser extent). The human form of a First is immortal, but can still be killed. If the human form is older, the Angel might also perish along with the shell. If newer, the Angel will often remember to remove their self before death can claim them. When a First is killed, there is no afterlife for them. Their existence stops at death.
Firsts/Angels still serve the Will of God and obey his commands. If given an order on Earth, they are not allowed to return to Heaven until the order is carried out. Most Angels do not communicate directly with God. There's a hierarchy of command going back to the first Angels. Only Gabriel speaks directly with God, and Gabriel speaks to his commanders, and on down the line. Many lesser Angels will live and die without having met God or Gabriel. Lower angels are ones not originally created by God, but were once human and elevated to the status of Angel either during life or after death. When elevated to Angel, the person will forget they were ever human and serve God wholly. Angels who recall their human life are rare, and most are so indoctrinated into the Firsts army that they will continue to serve regardless. The rare few that do remember and choose Free Will become either Fallen or more often, Renegades.
Demons
Demons, also known as the Fallen, are Angels that chose Free Will over serving God without question. Lucifer was the leader of the rebellion in heaven millennia ago, and has since become leader of the Fallen. His goal is to crush everything God has created, starting with God's precious creation (humans) and Earth. He commands his demons to sway as many humans to his side as possible in preparation for the future when one day he will take Earth for himself and destroy the known universe.
Demons are divided into Upper and Lesser demons. Upper demons are the original Angels that rebelled. They are also referred to as the Fallen. They are less in number than Lesser demons, as many Fallen have died over the millennia and their numbers are not quickly replenished. However, they are the stronger form of Demons and are as hard to kill as an angel. They are powerful and more careless than Angels, less secretive and more reckless.
Lesser demons are humans turned to Demons in life or after death. Humans turned demon retain their human forms and don't have a natural form like the Fallen have of their original Angelic form. Lesser demons are granted less powers, but are still hard to kill and are far more common.
Lucifer doesn't keep as tight of reins on Demons as God keeps on his Angels. Demons may come and go between Hell and Earth as they see fit. They are not banished to Earth until their goals are achieved because their goals tend to be less direct and more along the lines of 'tempt anyone and everyone.'
Renegades
Renegades are Angels that chose neither Lucifer nor God. Instead, they chose the human world. Renegades tend to live in human shells longer than other Angels (Fallen or Firsts). They will change their shell every century or so if they see fit for a new face, but more often than not they never consider it. They move around from place to place to keep from being noticed, and they never enter a church for fear of being found by God. It is unsure if Renegades can ever return to Heaven (some rumors say some have, some say there is no forgiveness for Angels and God will have a Renegade killed on sight) but a Renegade is always welcome among the Fallen if they so choose.
A Renegade's power taps out after a certain point, they do not keep getting stronger with time, but they are still strong enough to at least fight back should a First or a Demon find them. However, Renegades prefer to keep a low profile and stay out of the war between Lucifer and God. Instead, they enjoy human pleasures. And many have children with humans.
Renegades are rarer than Fallen and First. Few Angels choose no side as the Renegades, so their numbers do not replenish often. Nor do Renegades band together the way that Fallen and Firsts do. Renegades are to be killed if discovered, but finding them is not always so easy.
Nephilim
Nephilim are regarded as abominations in the eyes of the Lord. There is no chance for salvation for a Nephilim. In fact, Nephilim are ordered to be killed at birth. Firsts are sent to find the child and kill it instantly.
Many Nephilim do not grow to adulthood. It's rare that one does. Often, Renegades are unaware of the children they leave behind and offer no protection to the child. Occasionally a Renegade will protect their child, but Renegades have so many that they give up trying. The protection of a Renegade does not guarantee survival either. Renegades have been killed while trying to defend their children.
Some children do manage to survive into adulthood. It's uncommon, but the ones that do are forever running or in hiding. Many know that there is no salvation for them, even if they lead a perfect life, and that if discovered they'll be killed at any moment.
Nephilim have Angel blood in them. This leaves them with heightened emotions that their human bodies are not made to experience, leaving many Nephilim children unstable throughout childhood. A child's temper tantrum can end with many people killed by their hands. Nephilim are also born with inhuman strength. Their strength is that of an Angel's in a human form. It's strong enough to crush bones to dust in their grip, but Nephilim are not invincible. Nephilim are also faster (though not superspeed fast) and have more stamina and heightened senses. They're stronger than humans, and dangerous when out of control.
When Nephilim reach maturity, they stop aging. Nephilim children are immortal, but not indestructible. Bullets and arrows can pierce their skin like anyone else's.
Many Nephilim are born with a specific talent or affinity. Many are common talents repeated often, some are rarer. They tend to be an affinity with an element or aspect of life like an Angel's might be. But they never reach the levels of an Angel's and are limited by their human bodies.
Magic
Magic comes in two forms, black and white. All people are born with an affinity of magic, but some may never come into it. Magic requires knowledge of the magic you want to practice and an ability to access your ability within. Many people may gain knowledge of magic, but never be able to access their own and use it. People who use white magic are fewer than in the past, many being discovered as Witches and killed in times of growing suspicion. Healers, Priestesses, and other such people used to be common and are now only just beginning to resurface.
Black magic always has a consequence and always inflicts some sort of damage to the user and those they use it on. Black magic users tend to still be in existence due to having less reservations about using it negatively to save themselves. Thus, many black magic practitioners have survived the Dark Ages. They tend to be kinds like Necromancers, Sorcerers, and Sorceresses.
Many magic users are selfish and keep to themselves and only serve their own desires. They don't often involve themselves in the affairs of God and Lucifer and instead prefer to practice their craft in peace. The only exception are the Priestesses, who serve no religion but are devout to God and help try to protect the Earth from the invading demons.
Other
Between the magic already in the world at the creation of it and the Angels and Demons playing in the world and the magic users rise and fall, magic has become so imbibed into nature that other effects have been felt on Earth. Beings like Werewolves, Banshees, Vampires, and other such creatures (humans turned into supernatural) have been made. Many of these beings tend to stay underground. Some choose sides in the war between God and Lucifer, but many prefer to be on their own side and have their own way of carrying out their existence.
Because Demons are not limited to staying in place for a long period of time, their constant passage between Earth and Hell has weakened areas of the world. This allows for Hell to spill into certain cracks between the dimensions. In these areas dark creatures of Hell linger. People avoid these places naturally out of fear, and any who enter them feel too hot and overwhelmed with a sense of dread. Dark magic tends to be strongest at these Cracks. Priestesses seek to seal these cracks, but more appear than Priestesses exist to stop them. People fall through the Cracks, things climb out of them. They're dangerous and possible tools in the future war.
BRIEF CHARACTER HISTORY:
Celeste was born of a demon hunter and a Renegade. Who her father was or is now was never revealed to her. Her mother shrugged off every question about who he was, but Celeste still knew the tragically short story her mother gave when she pushed too much. Evelyn was young and fresh to the life. She was determined and headstrong. The Renegade had angered the wrong demons, and Evelyn had been in the right place at the right time. The Renegade had been so taken in by the hunter that they had spent a night of passion together that left Evelyn with a child.
That had been six years ago.
Most people didn't remember their own birth, and Celeste was no different, but sometimes she felt like she could recall the moment she came into this world. That she was aware she was out of the womb. It wasn't real, nothing more than a fever dream from time to time, but Celeste always wondered if it had to do with her being so aware of the flow of time. The past was constantly washing over her as it rushed to the future.
That was how Celeste had survived those early years. Evelyn knew the birth of her child would also be the death of her child. She was hyperaware of the Firsts that stalked her while she ran with the baby inside of her. Like so many abandoned mothers before her, Evelyn was left to fend for herself and the baby. But the determination that had made the Renegade love her made Evelyn stubborn enough to evade capture long enough to give birth to the baby Celeste. With the aid of old friends, Evelyn took the child and fled again to raise her in remote places that knew nothing of God or his Angels or his enemies the Fallen. She had been betrayed before she had ever reached her destination and set upon by an Angel. Not one of the Firsts, which may have been Evelyn and Celeste's only salvation. The Angel attacked Evelyn and Evelyn countered. The body was still fresh and the Angel not at his ultimate strength and Evelyn was an intense opponent, but she was also young and fresh. Only eighteen years old. She slipped and the Angel went past her defenses to where the baby had been laid for safekeeping while her mother fought. Evelyn screamed in fear and Celeste screamed in response to her mother's fear, and before the Angel's eyes Celeste grew faster than a human child should. The Angel was stunned long enough for Evelyn to kill him from behind. The Angel fell, his shell fading to dust, and Evelyn knew there would never be salvation for her or the child.
Evelyn raised Celeste as best as she could from then on, but Celeste's activation of her powers didn't stop after that moment. From that time on, Celeste grew at an accelerated rate. She grew too quickly that she never realized how to stop it before it was too late. Looking back, Evelyn realized that her rapid aging was the only thing that had saved Celeste's life. Evelyn would have fallen someday if she had had to protect the child alone and Celeste after her. But with Celeste growing Evelyn could train her in the meantime and there were two to guard her life now instead of one.
Celeste was never far from her mother. Her awareness of the world changed rapidly, from that of a child to that of an adult in just five short years. Her mother taught her the ways of the demon hunters during that time period, and she never let her daughter forget why she had to hide from the eyes of God for the rest of her existence. Once Celeste had asked her mother why they fought demons if God didn't want Evelyn or Celeste anymore. Evelyn had only shrugged her daughter's questions off and told her it was all she knew how to do.
The pair travelled the world as Celeste grew. Staying in one place too long was too dangerous. Celeste always accepted what her mother told her about the world, not knowing any other way to think with no other contact with people. Sometimes Celeste dreamed of joining the real world instead of existing only in shadows. Once a man had come and said something to her mother that had greatly upset her. He had been sent away and when Celeste asked why her mother said he asked for too much from her. Celeste never forgot the man or the way he had looked at her and wondered what had been too much to ask of her great mother.
Despite her curiosity of the world, Celeste wanted nothing more than to prove herself in her mother's eyes. When she was old enough to start fighting alongside Evelyn she leapt at the chance. She joined her in hunts, making many mistakes in her first attempts and growing stronger each time. She was as determined and stubborn as her mother, though her determination stemmed from wanting to prove herself to her mother.
Eventually Celeste reached the physical age of 18. Her view of the world was limited but sufficient for her survival. But it wasn't enough either. She stopped aging and Celeste realized that her mother was still aging. She was young now, but she wouldn't be forever. Someday she'd be gone, and then what would Celeste do?
No longer able to accept everything her mother says at face-value, Celeste's view of the world began to slowly open up in small ways. Questions that didn't pertain to demon hunting were asked more, and she began to look at the people around her and wonder what it would be like to be one. And if she might be like one someday. Even with the threat of Angels and Fallen at her back, looking to hunt her or recruit her.
( note; I'm taking her from early on in her story, before her world view changes more so that I can keep her innocence and curiosity that'll help her open up more on the Charon. )
PERSONALITY:
Due to rapid aging, Celeste gained the maturity of a woman in her late teens but not the intelligence to match the maturity. Because of this, she maintains a lot of innocence that comes from a lack of understanding about the world around her.
Celeste always had to be kept a secret and out of plain sight. Had she grown up at a normal pace she still wouldn't have received a formal education, but her experiences would have helped balance the maturity she gained with age. Her rapid aging limited her experiences to that of six years worth of life but the maturity of someone who was eighteen. Celeste understands the things that directly affect her life, but other things can be harder for her to grasp. Because of this, she maintains a certain quietness and shyness associated with her innocence in understanding the world outside of her immediate realm.
Growing up, Celeste was raised by a demon hunter. Her mother taught her that survival was number one. During the six years that Celeste was alive, she was constantly being trained to fight against the supernatural beings of the world. Specifically, demons. Celeste came to mirror her mother's ferocity in battle. When it comes to demons and angels, Celeste feels more on her turf and gains a confidence that reflects someone who was raised as a warrior and knows she's a warrior. Celeste feels at home in situations where she's fighting or dealing with enemies. She follows her mother's number one rule: us over them. She protects her life with a ferocity that can be sometimes frightening.
Most children reflect their parents' values, and as such Celeste was taught that demons are bad and angels are good. Celeste was also taught that angels obey the word of God, and because of Celeste's bloodlines as good as angels are they are still under orders to kill her. Because of this, Celeste's maturity levels make her question the black and white world she knows. Her mother rarely answers her questions about why everyone is their enemy and whether Celeste herself is good or evil, leaving Celeste confused over what is right and wrong. Celeste's worldview is a black and white world due to her upbringing, but her maturity makes her question this viewpoint and can often times leave her confused. When Celeste becomes troubled over these thoughts she typically just obeys what her mother tells her. Even if the thoughts come up again, she just reminds herself of what her mother has taught her and tries to obey that. But that kind of thinking can only last for so long.
Due to the angel blood inside of her, Celeste feels things harder than other people do. Angels never experience emotions half-heartedly. They feel with all their being, but due to their nature and being born as they are they know how to control the high levels of emotions they experience. Celeste's human body wasn't made to feel the way that angels do, but her angel blood makes her feel strongly regardless. Because of this, Celeste is constantly trying to temper her emotions to keep them from getting beyond her grasp. Anger tends to be the emotion that takes hold strongest because fighting makes her blood boil, and Celeste was raised a fighter. Sadness can also make Celeste want to lash out to defend herself against the pain, so anger is what Celeste struggles to control most of all. She fights hard to keep these emotions under control and to keep herself at a base level of feeling. She tries not let herself feel anything too strongly unless it take too much control of her and cause her to react in a way she doesn't want to. When she does lose control, Celeste can often blackout and it takes a lot to bring her back down from the emotions. So Celeste meditates often and takes deep breaths and will remove herself from a situation if she feels it's getting beyond her control and go somewhere where she can calm back down. She's gotten better at keeping the control, and it's only when emotions surprise her and are strong in that surprise that she her control comes into question.
At her most normal, Celeste is a quiet and curious girl. Because she feels so out of place in the world, she typically keeps to herself and the people she knows most (which usually just includes her mother). Because of her lack of knowledge, her curiosity can often be piqued by things she doesn't understand. Sometimes she just focuses her attention to try to learn more, but if the subject is too interesting for her to ignore she will speak up to ask more about it to try to learn more about the rest of the world outside of her immediate world. Otherwise, she can be unsure of herself, and shy despite how it looks. Often she comes off looking defensive and wild, like she might start a fight at any moment. But that's only due to how she was raised a fighter so it tends to be a part of her base personality. It's how she keeps herself safe and hides her shyness best.
When Celeste becomes less wary and lets her defenses down some she can be a sweet and kind girl. Her innocence and idea of a black and white world tend to make her more trusting of people who don't fit into her 'black' category (typically only demons and overtly dangerous people). Her wariness is always there initially, but if brought down by kindness and sweetness (even if it is deception) she can relax more and show herself more. She's naturally a kind and caring person. She wants to take care of others, even though her mother always taught her to put herself first because no one else would. On a shallow level, Celeste understands the need for isolation and safety, but on a deeper level Celeste fears ending up alone due to this. So if she finds someone she thinks she can trust, she'll be her more natural self in order to try to make a friend and ease her loneliness some.
Celeste's natural reaction to situations that make her uncomfortable or frightened or scared tends to be a ferocity that can sometimes get out of control. When uncomfortable, she can become snappy and sometimes rude. Her mother taught her how to be a fighter and that she should never show weakness so when she feels off-balance her natural reaction is to counter with a warrior's ferocity. On a normal day this can make her snappy and rude. If truly threatened, she is cool and calculating and cruel when she fights, and she doesn't hesitate to take out someone who makes her feel threatened. But if it gets out of hand, her fear and anger can become dangerous if it overtakes and makes her lose control.
When not feeling open and natural, Celeste often presents as a fighter. She mimics her mother, her only role model for most her life. She was raised to be a fighter, and with no other education all she knows is how to be a fighter. While Celeste often wonders about a life that doesn't involve focusing on her constant survival through hiding and fighting, she also feels the most confident in herself as a fighter. She feels proud and strong like her mother when she's in her natural element. She knows how to hide herself in plain sight, she knows how to fight, she knows to protect herself and not think twice about it, and she's never apologetic about it when she's the one in control. She's proud of her strength and despite her curiosity about other things, wants nothing more than to be like her mother and be a proud demon hunter one day.
Celeste is a natural born fighter. She struggles with her emotions from time to time, but is learning every day how to stop them from gaining control of her and how to be the one in control of herself. She has a very black and white view of the world, good and evil, from her upbringing, but still finds herself questioning this worldview due to her own existence. Her worldview is changing as she gains more knowledge to match her maturity, and sometimes it can make her afraid and sometimes it can thrill her. Celeste wants to follow her mother as much as she wants to experience something beyond the clandestine world of demon hunting. Celeste is growing every day and gaining more and more understanding as she does.
ABILITIES:
NEPHILIM ⇢ While her body is mostly human, there are some effects on a muscular level that her blood has affected. Her muscles are stronger than humans, giving her the strength of an Angel in human form. She's not strong enough to lift an elephant or crush diamonds, but she is strong enough that she could crush bones in her grip if she wasn't thinking about it. She can lift more than even the strongest human could. She's also faster than a normal. Nowhere close to superspeed, but a human's speed at its peak condition. She doesn't tire out as quickly as a human might. She has heightened senses, allowing her to see sharper and better and differentiate smells and tastes more. She also experiences emotions stronger than any human could stand. They can cause her to lose control, but the most dangerous is if she loses control of anger or fear. It can cause her to black out and give into the emotion, and with her heightened abilities can make her a potential threat to people. Her heightened sense can also be damaging if a sound is too high and it causes her to lose her focus (which can effectively stop a berserker state) or a blinding light can leave her sightless for too long.
HUMAN ⇢ While she has some advantages that make her more like a human at top condition, Celeste still has the body of human. She's no more durable than any other human is. She can be pierced by sharp objects and bleeds like anyone else. Her stamina makes her last longer, but she can still run out of energy. Sometimes it can take longer to recharge, especially if she uses her powers. She also tends to require more food to sustain herself and a lack of food can make her feel weakened as well.
HUNTER ⇢ Celeste never attended school or had any other caretaker other than her mother. Her mother was a demon hunter, and her mother knew what kind of life Celeste would lead. She would always be hunted by both sides all her life. So her mother trained her to be a hunter just like her. The majority of Celeste's six years of life have been devoted to training. Long, tiring, and often painful nights of abuse from her mother to make her stronger, faster, and better. Celeste has learned hand-to-hand combat and strategy for personal fighting. She's dangerous and effective. She's learned to keep a level head in fight, and prefers to be cool and calculating. Celeste shows no mercy to her enemies, always believing 'us over them'. Celeste knows how to use a wide variety of guns and knives (these are the only weapons she's trained with). She prefers her two handguns, though, and her hunting knife. Easier to carry and use and allows for more range of motion.
TIME MANIPULATION ⇢ Celeste's natural affinity is with time. She's a small-scale time-manipulator. It tends to extend to her and her immediate area. Celeste cannot move through time, but she can speed time for a specific point and rewind time. Rewinding time is always temporary. Anything rewound always returns to the state it was. Keeping time from its natural state is too much effort and time doesn't like to move backwards. Celeste rarely, if ever, uses this talent. It never solves any problem. She can also recall her past if necessary. She sees it like a vision, but is limited to only seeing it through her eyes. If she didn't take notice of it or see it properly, she can't see it even in a vision. She can also see into the past of others the same way, but only through a physical and strong mental connection. It takes more effort and is more exhausting and requires the cooperation and openness of her partner to accomplish. It is also limited in the same way it would be if she looked into her own past, only through their eyes and knowledge. She can fast-forward time to heal wounds as well. Time doesn't mind this because it can eventually catch up to the point she forwarded too, but rewound time cannot catch up. Speeding up time uses energy the more she has to move through time. For small wounds it's not as hard to speed up time. For major wounds that would require hours, days, months, years to heal, Celeste cannot speed up the time for those beyond a certain point. It drains her body and could potentially kill her if she moves time too much. When she speeds up time she speeds it up in a localized area. She can expand this area up to five feet around her at most, and any other scale smaller. The larger the area the more energy, the smaller the less. She uses small scale areas for healing wounds, localizing the manipulation to a certain point. For larger scale areas, she mostly uses it to stop time. Time is hard to stop. Time is always moving, so moving it is easier, but making it resist its own movement is difficult and painful. Celeste can only stop time for brief moments, up to a minute at most, and after becomes dangerous to her health. Celeste doesn't abuse her powers. For cuts and bruises and other wounds that heal properly with time, she'll leave them be. She would rather let them heal themselves that risk using her powers. Messing with time scares her and has unseen consequences, so she really only uses it in extreme situations.

Is this Hell?
It doesn't seem like Hell. Hell is all fire and brimstone, right? But it seems as bad as Hell.
Close enough.
[ She runs a hand through her hair a little nervously now as her eyes dart around the area around her. Like she's checking to see if the coast is clear. She looks back at the screen now.
She sighs and relaxes a little. She looks tired once the tension eases. ]
Is there a way to get more ammo here? Do we stop anywhere I can get some? Trade for some? Something? [ She frowns. ] I want to know what my resources are.
Should I be afraid of anything on this ship? Anything out there that wants to hurt us? Monsters or demons? [ Or Angels… ]
Thank you. [ Flicks off the feed. ]
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Her blood's never burned like this before. Irritation and anger have always come easier to the nephilim but she's never felt the angel's blood in her rise to a boil that feels like the sun blistering her from inside out. She curls her fingers into her palms, clasping her fists so hard she leaves crescent indents in the heels of her hands. A red haze settles over her and she takes in deep breaths, feeling like a tightly wound coil poised to spring at the lightest touch.
A Renegade's taunts should mean nothing to her. The Angel… man—He was about as damned as she was.
So why did his reminding her of her status make her feel like she might lash out at any moment?
He spoke on. Casually. Carelessly. As if unaware that the girl before him was about to reach her breaking point. That she might at any point lunge for his throat. He was old and thoughtless. He forgot how to practice caution. He thought himself untouchable. Time did that to some of them. Made them believe they were untouchable. That they were the gods the humans used to believe they were. Celeste could almost laugh at that. His miscalculation would be his undoing.
She ground her teeth. Calm. Serene. Like the ocean. The emotions roll in and fall back out. None of them last. None of them overwhelm. She tried. She wouldn't think of this man's weaknesses. Of how to end him. She would remain in control, even as he called her unwanted and cast out.
"But not alone."
His words broke through the red haze. Her fists released and her hands sat limply at her side as her eyes found his face again, mystified by the idea. "How?" She asked.
"I'm like you after all. You're like me. We even share the same race, even if your blood is to a lesser extent." His smile was blinding. Damned angels. "Wouldn't you like company other than your mother? She won't be around forever."
The words chilled and stirred her all at once. She didn't want her mother to die, but a friend. One that would last as long as her… Her mother would say no. Renegades were too close to Angels and one might turn on her if they thought they might get salvation again.
Would he lie?
"I… should go," Celeste hesitated, stepping back, retreating inside of herself and back towards her home.
"Think about it. I'll be around," The man smiled as he watched her go. Celeste's eyes never left his. Not until he was too far gone.
Then she ran home, blood pounding in her ears with excitement.
